Local firm get FDA approval of medical device

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a medical device used to diagnose and treat prostate cancer developed by Envisioneering Medical Technologies of St. Louis.

The device, called TargetScan, combines 3-D images with a stationary probe, which helps physicians plan and perform targeted prostate biopsies, leading to improved treatment with less-invasive procedures.

Current diagnostic tools can miss as much as 20 percent to 30 percent of potential cancers, said Dr. Gerald Andriole, professor of surgery and chief of urology at Washington University School of Medicine and director of the Urological Research Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, in a statement.

Several urology clinics are currently testing TargetScan, and Envisioneering Medical Technologies plans a larger launch this spring.

St. Louis-based Envisioneering Medical Technologies develops, manufactures and markets diagnostic and treatment tools for physicians.
