Envisioneering Introduces New Prostate Cancer Treatment Technology to Europe

St. Louis, Mo. and Veendendaal, Netherlands (January 25, 2008) – Envisioneering Medical Technologies, located in St. Louis, signed an exclusive European distribution agreement with Netherlands-based Isodose Control.  The deal combines Isodose treatment planning software with TargetScan’s precision biopsy and seed placement.
The distribution agreement allows European brachytherapists and radiation oncologists for the first time to access TargetScan technology, a tool that supports more accurate radiation delivery to the prostate gland according to clinical research.  Patients benefit by receiving accurate, nerve-sparing treatments for improved outcomes with reduced treatment side effects such as impotence and incontinence.
“Through this agreement we will configure TargetScan to work with Isodose Control’s treatment planning software, thereby placing new capabilities into the hands of physicians to aid in their fight against prostate cancer,” said Robert G. Mills, Envisioneering Medical Technologies president.  “More importantly, our partnership with Isodose means we can now deliver advanced prostate cancer treatment technology to more patients around the globe.”
Unlike traditional devices, TargetScan supports brachytherapy treatments by providing a 3-dimensional view of the prostate gland coupled with a stationary probe to ensure accurate radiation delivery to pre-planned cancer targets.  For patients, the intended outcomes of TargetScan-supported brachytherapy treatments include more accurate treatment delivery, reduced risk of side efforts and improved patient comfort.
“Envisioneering’s newly developed TargetScan is the first static probe to accurately visualize the complete 3-D prostate during the insertion of the treatment applicator, offering unprecedented precision,” said Eric van ’t Hooft, Isodose Control Chairman.  “It is exactly what has been missing in the past.”

About brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a minimally invasive, nerve- and tissue-sparing procedure that involves the use of radioactive seeds the size of rice grains.  Offered as an out-patient procedure, brachytherapy treatments usually take 45 minutes to an hour to perform with most patients returning to their normal activities within days.  The success rates of prostate brachytherapy have compared favorably with success rates of radical prostatectomy and external beam radiation.  In comparison studies, prostate brachytherapy has shown to have a favorable side effect profile when compared with other modalities.  Clinical studies have shown that prostate brachytherapy has a cure rate of 94 percent for appropriately selected patients.  For early diagnosed cancer cases, brachytherapy is emerging as the treatment of choice in Europe and a growing number of North American clinics.
