Prostate Cancer Prevention

Unfortunately, physicians cannot always explain the random selection of prostate cancer. For them, it is a matter of prevention and minimization of risk factors to assist in reducing the chances of prostate cancer, as well as treatment once identified.

A risk factor is anything that increases a person's chance of developing prostate cancer; a protective factor is anything that decreases. Some of the risk factors for cancer can be avoided, but many cannot. For example, following a healthy diet can assist in the prevention of prostate cancer; however, you cannot control inherited genes that may be more susceptible. Prostate cancer prevention means doing anything in your power to avoid risk factors and increase protective factors that can be controlled so that the chance of developing prostate cancer decreases. Although many risk factors can be avoided, it is important to keep in mind that avoiding risk factors does not guarantee that you will not get cancer.

Getting Tested

When should you be tested for prostate cancer? According to the American Cancer Society, men aged 50 and older with a life expectancy of at least 10 years, and those over the age of 45 who are in high-risk groups (such as African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer) should have a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE) once every year.

Envisioneering Medical focuses resources and technology to develop equipment to aid physicians in detection, diagnosis and treatment. The TargetScan 3D imaging and targeted biopsy system offers the first real advance in prostate imaging and biopsy in over a decade. It eases any discomfort of probing during examination, as once it is place, there is no need for repositioning. The system allows a physician to generate a true solid 3D image, manipulate it, and precisely plan and undertake a multi-sample biopsy of a targeted tissue mass in the prostate. Basic Changes to Everyday Habits to promote a Healthy Prostate

  • Eat moderate sized portions, avoid foods high in fat,  watch your calorie intake, and include foods rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.
  • Limit sweets and salt while including whole grain foods, such as brown rice and whole wheat bread.
  • Use alcohol in moderation.  It is typically recommended that men have no more than 2 drinks per day.
  • Include many fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. Antioxidants found in these types of food help with prostate cancer and other forms of cancer.
  • Mix soy based products into your diet.  Soybeans and other legumes contain phytoestrogens, which are plant-based chemicals that behave like the hormone estrogen in the human body and might help to prevent prostate cancer.
  • Drink green tea, which contains antioxidants such as polyphenols that may help prevent certain cancers.
